Watson Lake Water Quality Treatment To Begin June 2

On June 2, the City of Prescott will begin treating Watson Lake to improve water quality and reduce algae and aquatic weed growth.  Aquatic Consulting and Testing, the City’s consultant, will apply a phosphorus binding product to the lake.

Phosphorus binding removes excess nutrients from the water and lake sediment to reduce algae and aquatic weed blooms while improving water quality and clarity. The treatment is safe for drinking water, aquatic life, and recreational users. It follows guidance from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) and aligns with the City’s lake management plan.

“This treatment helps protect Watson Lake so families can enjoy it safely for fishing, kayaking, and other fun activities,” said, Josephine Maressa ADEQ’s Water Quality Division Deputy Director. “Cleaner water means fewer algae blooms, a healthier environment for fish and wildlife, and better protection for public health.”

During treatment a small pontoon will travel across the lake and apply the product as a cloudy liquid slurry. To ensure the best results, the City asks lake users to avoid the boat’s path and wake.

The lake will be open with no restrictions on fishing or recreation during treatment. The City expects to complete the treatment in two days.
