City of Prescott Celebrates the 35th ADA Anniversary

The City of Prescott is proud to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) July 26th, 2025. Signed into law in 1990, the ADA is a piece of civil rights legislation that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. It guarantees equal rights and access in areas such as employment, education, transportation, and public and private accommodations.

In recognition of this important milestone, the City of Prescott is highlighting local efforts to promote accessibility and inclusion. These efforts include the installation of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) boards at the community splash pad, the Armory, and the Prescott Regional Airport. Additionally, the City continues to support inclusive programming through its Special Needs Activity Program (SNAP), which provides recreational opportunities tailored for individuals with special needs.

Additional Information from Prescott Public Library

Prescott Public Library strives for Access for All in our services!

  • The library provides assistive technology for vision and hearing loss on the 2nd floor. These include software on library computers that reads aloud text displayed on the screen, adjustable computer settings, magnifying lamps, and a Clearview Speech machine which scans printed material, magnifies it and converts it to speech.  Listen devices for library programs, classes and tours. These portable receivers with headphones provide hearing assistance by connecting to the library’s meeting room sound system. Listen receivers are also compatible with various types of hearing aids. A portable Listen Kit for organizations to check out and use at their meetings and presentations hosted outside the library.
  • Homebound Services serves patrons living in the Prescott city limits who may be confined to their residence or care home/facility due to illness or physical disability. 928.777.1526.
  • One segment of our community that is often overlooked are those who are non-verbal and/or neurodivergent. Walking around the Youth Services area you might notice some changes: communication boards to help patrons with communication challenges express themselves, icons on the bookshelves, walls, and restroom doors to help identify everyday library items and spaces, and books with colorful AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) spine label stickers.
  • In addition, our Youth librarians have partnered with Fidget Pockets and Beyond the Label to establish More Choices for Voices, a new club that meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 6 pm for a special sensory story hour. All are welcome to come and enjoy interactive storytelling and participate in sensory activities.
  • Youth Services also has book collections for dyslexic readers.
  • And thanks to a generous donation from Desert Financial Credit Union, we have seven iPads with specialized AAC apps that will soon be available to the public for checkout. Stop by the Youth area to learn more about our new resources, programs, and communication boards!
