City of Prescott Provides Update on Willow Creek Gravity Sewer Project

The City of Prescott is providing an update on the Willow Creek Gravity Sewer Project, including the temporary lowering of water levels at Willow Lake to support construction of a new gravity sewer main. The lake level reduction is necessary to allow for safe access and installation of critical infrastructure that will replace the existing force main along Willow Lake Road.

As part of the project, an archaeological study was conducted in coordination with the Arizona State Museum and the Hopi Tribal Historic Preservation Office, in accordance with the Arizona Antiquities Act and the City of Prescott Historic Preservation Code. The archaeological work has been completed.

During the investigation, archaeologists identified cultural features and an extensive number of artifacts. In addition, human remains were encountered. The quantity of materials identified required additional time to properly document and process, extending the duration of the archaeological phase.

Work was conducted in accordance with all applicable laws and protocols, and the City coordinated closely with the Hopi Tribe to ensure the respectful treatment and appropriate return of the remains, consistent with the Tribe’s wishes. The City remains committed to preserving cultural resources while delivering essential infrastructure improvements for the community.

The Willow Creek Gravity Sewer Project is a critical infrastructure improvement that will replace an aging sewer line nearing the end of its service life and provide upgrades to the Prescott Lakes Regional Lift Station. Construction of the new gravity sewer main is anticipated to begin in summer 2026. Willow Lake water levels will continue to remain low throughout construction.
