Practices and Concepts that are the building blocks to be Firewise

With Summer quickly approaching which brings high temperatures and elevated fire dangers, here are a list of some of the practices and concepts we hope our community follow to be Firewise.

  1. Excess vegetation on road and driveway shoulders is removed.
  2. Cedar shake roofs are replaced with non flammable, Class A alternative coverings.
  3. Driveways, non flammable walkways and pathways can halt the spread of wildfire.
  4. Careful spacing of trees and shrubs lower wildfire potential.
  5. Rock landscape areas can interrupt a fires' pathway to the house.
  6. Fuels are chipped / removed immediately after cutting.
  7. Wood is piled away from the house.
  8. A three foot fire free area is created on all sides of the house.
  9. Dead leaves and branches are removed from trees, shrubs, and plants within the home ignition zone.
  10. Indigenous wildflowers and native plants are excellent Firewise choices.
  11. Green lawns and irrigated areas serve as fire breaks.
  12. Fuels are thinned at the edge of the home ignition zone.
  13. Deciduous trees are carefully spaced within the home ignition zone.
